Proud Lions from the Kamehameha Club volunteered for the 2nd annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event on October 2, 2010. There were 4,500 participants congregating at Richardson Field AND about 1/3 of them registered that day! It was a mass of people doing their stretches under the direction of CURVES. We were serenaded by Vocalist Tracy Nalani'Eha Smith, who is a cancer survivor. We met one of the Forever Young Honorees, Jackie Young, another cancer survivor, 76 years old and she looks 55. She was one of the seniors honored in Midweek. It was probably beyond what the MSABC organizers imagined as they thought there were going to be 2,000-3,000 participants.
We were assigned to go through the crowd to collect and/or have completed the Navy waivers. And our own Lion Walter Delce went above and beyond our assigned duties and volunteered to unload the boxes of apples from the container, 'one apple at a time'.
And guess who we bumped into? None other than Lion Darlene Nakayama, who we could not recognize in 'shoes' other than her role as the Hawaii Lions Foundation Officer. Her husband, Dale, graciously took our photos.
Our volunteers included Lions Walter Delce, Kathy Doctorello, Sam Doctorello, Gertrude Hara, Warren Hayama, Masuo Kino, Karen Pack, and Melodie Sasaki. Lion Joann Yee surprised us and participated in the Walk.![]() |
