On October 15, 2010, Nu`uanu School conducted a flu clinic on campus. 274 students received inoculations, including 175 flu shots and 99 nasal sprays.
The clinic success was due to a coordinated effort among the teachers, staff, and volunteers. The school's consulting Public Health Nurse was amazed at how smoothly the morning went. The school custodians converted the library into a temporary clinic, and teachers passed out and collected forms to assure that students had identification, proper paperwork, etc.
Eight Kamehameha Lions Club (KLC) volunteers shepherded the students to their shots and flu mist areas. Then, the Lions escorted the students to a holding area for 15 minutes to observe if they had adverse reactions to the inoculations.
Lions Ben Tanaka, Masuo Kino, and Franklin Takahashi made sure the students received their stickers, hand stamp, and sat safely in the holding area. Lions Van Yoneda (KLC volunteer coordinator), Warren Hayama, John Heatherman, and Sam Doctorello, and Katherine Doctorello made sure the students were led to the correct area for their flu inoculations.
The volunteers were treated to a scrumptious school lunch of spaghetti, fresh buttered bread, green salad, and peach slices. Nu`uanu School Principal James Toyooka joined the group for lunch and praised them for their hard work and hoped that there will be other opportunities for a lasting relationship with the Kamehameha Lions Club.
Our thanks to the Kamehameha Lions Club volunteers, who helped to make the clinic a success.
